Clauses
Cl1 32 species make upward the dolphin family
Cl2 32 species that.... family are closely related(Verb1) to whales & in fact
include (Verb 2) the animate being know as the killer whale,
Now we know that for the Verb-ing modifier
Southward V Object , -ing
-ing modifies whole preceding clause (DESCRIBE/RESULT) and non the preceding substantive or the bailiwick
As per the explaination in the OG for pick B
"Changing the verb to the participial growing
introduces ambiguity, because it could refer
backto the subject field of the sentence {32
species)."
one) Please assist to clarify how can -ing modify(thus create amiguity) the subject and not the whole clause
2) For choice B
CL2 : 32 species <are closely related ...> & <include .....whale>,
mod1 <growing upto 30 feet> :
If nosotros consider only this mod. would information technology be correct to say that it(such an -ing modifier) tin meaningfully describe nearly the CL2 as a whole ?
would it make any sense here
Because information technology becomes confusing in few questions in which -ing is used to modify the preceding clause (whereas it fabricated more than sense to change preceding noun by using relative pronoun)
(i.due east tin can such cases of modifier exist considered equally a Description of the preceding clause)
(if possible Please explain with an instance for this uncertainty )
Hi at that place,
Thanks for posting your uncertainty here.
I am non certain what you lot mean to convey through the clause analysis. So here is how we would interruption the sentence with Selection B into clauses.
The 32 species that brand up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known equally the killer whale, growing every bit big every bit 30 feet long and famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
Cl. 1: The 32 species
Cl. ii: that make up the dolphin family
Cont. of Cl. 1: are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known as the killer whale, growing every bit big as 30 feet long and famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
So every bit highlighted, the first clause has two verbs "are related" and "include", and the second clause has one verb "make up".
At present the comma + verb-ing modifier "growing" modifies the preceding clause "The 32 species... are related... and include...." One thing to e'er keep in listen well-nigh the verb-ing modifiers is that they denote some activity. That'due south why nosotros phone call them "verb-ing" modifiers. The action that they denote must have a doer. Generally, the doer of the action denoted bu the "comma + verb-ing" modifiers is teh Bailiwick of the modified clause.
In this instance. the Subject of the modified clause is "The 32 species". Now enquire yourself, do the 32 species grow equally large as 30 feet long? Certainly not. This answer is absolutely illogical. So we run into hither that the action denoted past the "comma + verb-ing" modifier does non make sense with the Subject of the modified clause. Hence, use of "comma + verb-ing" is incorrect in Choice B.
You can read the following article for more data on this topic:
usage-of-verb-ing-modifiers-135220.html
Promise this helps.
Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thanks.

Dear Friends,
Hither is a detailed caption to this question-
marine wrote:

(A) include the creature known as the killer whale, which tin grow to be 30 feet long and is
(B) include the animal known as the killer whale, growing as large as 30 feet long and
(C) include the animal known as the killer whale, growing upward to 30 feet long and existence
(D) includes the animate being known every bit the killer whale, which can grow every bit big every bit 30 feet long and is
(E) includes the animal known every bit the killer whale, which tin grow to be 30 feet long and it is
Pregnant is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended significant is key to solving this question; the intended significant of the crucial office of this sentence is that the 32 species that make upwards the dolphin family include the creature known as the killer whale, and the killer whale tin can grow to exist thirty feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
Concepts tested here: Field of study-Verb Agreement + Meaning + Verb Forms + Parallelism
• The introduction of the present participle ("verb+ing"- "growing" in this case) subsequently comma more often than not leads to a crusade-event relationship.
• "being" is only to be used when it is office of a substantive phrase or represents the passive continuous verb tense; the apply of passive continuous must be justified in the context.
• Whatsoever elements linked by a conjunction ("and" in this sentence) must be parallel.
A: Correct. This answer option correctly refers to the plural substantive "32 species" with the plural verb "include". Moreover, Selection A correctly refers to the singular noun "the killer whale" with the atypical pronoun "its". Further, Option A uses the phrase "which can grow to be xxx feet long", conveying the intended meaning - that the 32 species that brand upwards the dolphin family include the brute known equally the killer whale, and equally a dissever activeness, the killer whale tin can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods. Additionally, Option A maintains parallelism between "tin can grow to be 30 feet long" and "is famous for its ambitious hunting pods". Besides, Selection A is free of any awkwardness or redundancy.
B: This respond choice alters the pregnant of the sentence through the phrase "growing equally large as xxx feet long"; the use of the "comma + nowadays participle ("verb+ing" - "growing" in this sentence) incorrectly implies that the 32 species that make up the dolphin family include the beast known every bit the killer whale, and every bit a effect , the 32 species can abound to be up to thirty feet long and are famous for their aggressive hunting pods; the intended meaning is that the 32 species that make upwards the dolphin family include the brute known as the killer whale, and as a separate action the killer whale tin can abound to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods; please think, the introduction of the present participle ("verb+ing"- "growing" in this case) after comma generally leads to a cause-consequence relationship. Further, Choice B incorrectly refers to the plural substantive "32 species" with the singular pronoun "its". Additionally, Option B uses the needlessly wordy phrase "as big equally xxx feet long", leading to clumsiness and redundancy.
C: This reply pick alters the meaning of the judgement through the phrase "growing equally big as xxx feet long"; the apply of the "comma + nowadays participle ("verb+ing" - "growing" in this judgement) incorrectly implies that the 32 species that brand upward the dolphin family include the animal known as the killer whale, and equally a result , the 32 species can grow to be upward to 30 feet long and are famous for their aggressive hunting pods; the intended meaning is that the 32 species that make upward the dolphin family include the animal known as the killer whale, and as a separate action the killer whale can grow to exist 30 anxiety long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods; please remember, the introduction of the nowadays participle ("verb+ing"- "growing" in this case) after comma mostly leads to a crusade-effect human relationship. Further, Option C incorrectly refers to the plural noun "32 species" with the singular pronoun "its". Additionally, Pick C is awkward and needlessly wordy due to its utilise of the discussion "being"; please call back, "being" is only to exist used when information technology is part of a noun phrase or represents the passive continuous verb tense; the use of passive continuous must exist justified in the context.
D: This reply choice incorrectly refers to the plural noun "32 species" with the atypical verb "includes". Farther, Selection D uses the needlessly wordy phrase "as big as xxx feet long", leading to awkwardness and back-up.
E: This reply choice incorrectly refers to the plural substantive "32 species" with the singular verb "includes". Farther, Choice E fails to maintain parallelism between "tin grow to be 30 feet long" and "it is famous for its ambitious hunting pods"; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction ("and" in this judgement) must exist parallel.
Hence, A is the best answer pick.

A very skilful question to clarify the features of participial phrase modifiers. The rule is that, when participial phrases are ready off past commas (other than at the get-go of a sentence), they tin human action equally adjectives modifying almost any noun in the previous clause, nigh often the subject area of the previous clause.
In your instance, "5 fledgling body of water eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summertime, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully since raised transplants from Norway began in 1975," nosotros could see the "bringing..." clause equally adverbial, modifying the verb "left" as its effect, OR as an adjective, in fact modifying the "eagles" -- either of which makes perfect sense. It would be awkward, still, modifying the nearest noun, "summer." This is why it would be incorrect, in this example, to supervene upon "bringing" with "which brings," every bit "which" by dominion MUST alter the substantive or noun idea immediately preceding information technology.
Usually, this ways that participial modifiers are more flexible and therefore more likely to be right in SC. However, in this wonderful example from the OG, the "grow" clause is definitely supposed to modify the noun correct before it, "whale," and so the relative clause beginning with "which" is appropriate. "Growing," on the other hand, could modify the entire preceding clause (that is, the verb "are related" or the verb "include") or, most likely, the subject field of the previous clause, that is, the 32 species. Although information technology is not placed side by side to the word "species," it is placed adjacent to the clause of which "species" is the subject area. Since either of those would be illogical, (B) and (C) introduce an unnecessary ambiguity into the sentence, although I'll point out that neither one is technically wrong, since a participial phrase here could, theoretically, alter "whales" likewise. It's only inferior to the relative clause modification choice given in (A).
In improver, information technology's worth noting that "growing" and "which can abound" take decidedly different meanings, then (B) and (C) introduce this problem, besides.
For a clear example of the participial phrase at the finish of a sentence modifying the subject of a preceding clause, consider this:
"The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the great feats of classical civilization and one of the famous 7 Wonders of the World, continuing over 100 feet high and constructed in the early 3rd Century B.C.E."
Lo, there are fifty-fifty 2 such clauses!

The fault that i find with the sentence is "abound to exist". The fault is corrected by choices B and D. D is the well-nigh appropriate construction.

I think I may be wrong, but in B, shouldn't "growing equally large as xxx feet long" but exist "growing equally big as 30 anxiety" (the long is redundant).
The aforementioned mistake crops up in D.
In C, there is a shift in tense.
The "it" in Due east is not needed.
Then, I am going to go w/ A.

I option B (parallel relative pronoun)
Since we have two relative pronoun which modify "the killer whale"
1.which can grow to be 30 anxiety long---->growing as big as xxx feet long
2.which is famous for its aggressive hunting pods. ---famous for its agressive hunting pods.
A. the killer whale, (relative pronoun)which can grow to be 30 feet long and (verb)is
C. include the creature known as the killer whale, (relative pronoun)growing up to xxx feet long and existence(which is being--passive relative)---Active not parallel passive
D. include the animal known as the killer whale, (relative pronoun)which can abound every bit big equally xxx anxiety long and (verb)is
E. include the animal known equally the killer whale, (relative pronoun) which can abound to be 30 feet long and clause it is

The 32 species that brand up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the fauna known as the killer whale, which can grow to be thirty feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
"The 32 species" is the subject field here. 'that make upwardly the dolphin family unit' is just extra infor nigh subject. So ignore it.
The subject is plural, so nosotros will look for ans choices with 'include'
Take D and Due east out.
Among A, B and C
(A) include the animal known equally the killer whale, which tin can grow to exist 30 feet long and is >> Correct
(B) include the brute known equally the killer whale, growing as big as thirty feet long and >> 'Growing' and 'is famous' are not parallel.
(C) include the creature known as the killer whale, growing up to 30 feet long and being >> wrong use
Quote:
The one thing that struck me almost most this question was the fact that the subject is "32 species that make up the dolphin family unit". How do you lot figure if such a big phrase is the subject?
Its a very simple S-V question. They take already done half work for you. Look at the judgement advisedly.
The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact
The 'are' in judgement already tell you lot that the subject is plural.
If you have question about HOW to identify subject in a judgement, then you lot might want to go through grammar basics. Aristotle SC grail has articulate and curtailed chapter on grammer basics.

B is incorrect considering Growing is modifying 32 species? Is this correct This distorts the meaning of the sentence
And in pick A it is the killer whale that tin can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods
No, that not what happens in B.
Recollect: COMMA + ING modifier the whole preceding clause.
With only an exception: ", including" Case "... her books, including Harry Potter."
With that said
The 32 species that brand up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact
B. include the animal known as the killer whale, growing equally large as 30 feet long and (...)
growing modifies the whole preceding clause, not the killer wale nor the 32 species. Alter the preceding clause mean 2 affair:
ane)present the results of an action
two)add data
If yous want to alter a single noun "the killer whale" you cannot utilize COMMA + ING, but yous take to employ a noun modifier (such as "which").
Promise everything is clear

two) For choice B
CL2 : 32 species <are closely related ...> & <include .....whale>,
mod1 <growing upto 30 anxiety> :
If we consider only this mod. would it exist right to say that it(such an -ing modifier) can meaningfully describe about the CL2 as a whole ?
would it make whatsoever sense here
Because it becomes disruptive in few questions in which -ing is used to modify the preceding clause (whereas it made more sense to modify preceding noun by using relative pronoun)
(i.e can such cases of modifier be considered as a DESCRIPTION of the preceding clause)
(if possible Please explain with an case for this dubiousness )

EDIT: I notice that this problem is not correctly stated. D/Due east are introduced with "includes", not include, in the correct OG problem (problem #67). A lot more than people would be correct on this one, had they known to eliminate D/E correct off the bat.
B) "the brute..., (verb-ing) "as big equally" is just wrong. You shouldn't have a present participle in this example, and "every bit large as" is not the correct expression. B gone
C) Again, verb-ing is incorrect both for growing and existence. C gone
D) "as big every bit" is an awkward expression in general, but other than that this sentence looks squeamish. Keep as a contender.
E) "tin can grow to be" is non the right expression, also "it" is superfluous, eliminate East.
A) "can grow to be" implies that at that place is a probability that the/a killer whale grows upwards to thirty anxiety, that makes perfect sense and is the intended significant of the author. Also, the "is" logically flows into famous. Betwixt A and D, A sounds much, much better and so nosotros go with A.

Should I look at this similar family includes or 32 species include? Any experts there?
Hi Govind, to place whether the subject field is family unit or 32 species or something else, we demand to wait at the verb. Equally yous take rightly figured out, include/includes is the verb here. Every bit yous would appreciate, subject is goose egg merely the doer of the verb.
So, to identify the subject field, let's identify who/what is the doer of the verb.
In other words, who/what is the doer of include/includes.
In other words, who/what include/includes the beast known equally the killer whale?
In the context of the sentence, it should be clear that the 32 species include the creature known as the killer whale.
And then, the 32 species is the subject and hence, the verb include is appropriate.
On a side notation, the clauses in the get-go part of the sentence are:
i) The 32 species are closely related to whales
ii) (The 32 species) include the fauna known as the killer whale
3) that brand up the dolphin family
Through this deconstruct also, information technology should exist axiomatic that the 32 species include the brute known every bit the killer whale.

Afterward reading the comments i really someone to shed light on this question to ostend our reasoning.
A cardinal thing to notation in B and C is the presence of the participial phrase: growing....
Participial phrases of this nature (that announced towards the end of a clause) modify the subject of the preceding clause. In this case, that subject is 32 species.
And then, at the very to the lowest degree, in that location is an ambiguity, because B and C seem to propose that the 32 species are growing; from the context of the sentence, it is clear that actually the whale can grow.
This is also a skillful reason why A is correct: which in A appropriately modifies whale, the nearest grammatically eligible noun.
p.southward. Our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses participial phrases, their application and examples in significant particular. If you can PM y'all email-id, I tin send you the respective section.
I just got a pocket-sized doubt with the caption provided past you. Obviously the correct ans is OA A. Simply in instance of B and C, growing modifies the Unabridged preceding clause and not the subject field lone. Every bit per my agreement, Growing as large as........ and Growing up to be..... is a verbing modifier. A verbing modifier that appears afterwards a clause and is preceded by a comma, modifies the entire preceding clause.
In this example modification of unabridged preceding clause, as in options B and C is wrong.
OA A has the correct modification. Which modifies Killer Whale.
D and E tin be ruled out for S-V agreement.
It would be nice of you if you tin indicate out where my thinking is wrong. Please guide me.

S_V understanding trouble in D&East. 32 Species (Plural) _ Includes (singular) - wrong.
D Due east Eliminated.
Growing is Verb-ing modifier and wrongly modifying 32 species. B C eliminated
AS large as & Long together are unnecessary. Eliminate B D

Discipline-VERB AGREEMENT
you encounter "include" vs "includes". this is a atypical/plural carve up, so you know that you should look for the subject of this verb.
looking dorsum through the judgement, we meet that "32 species" is the subject, and that a plural verb is thus required.
two ways to tell this:
(a) the desired verb is PARALLEL to "are closely related to whales". since these 2 verbs are continued by "and", they must have parallel grammar. since "are" is plural, nosotros need another plural verb.
(b) "that make upwardly the dolphin family" is a modifier and can therefore be excluded from our search for the subject. the only possible subject that'due south left, so, is "32 species".
this kills d/e.
--
REDUNDANCY
you don't say both "every bit big as..." and "long" in the same judgement. you can use but one of these words, both of which express the same thought (i.e., length or size).
this kills b/d.
--
-ING MODIFIER Following COMMA
this type of modifier modifies the entire preceding clause.
this is illogical in the example of "growing upward to 30 feet long", because the suggestion is that the 32 species of the dolphin family unit grow upwardly to this long equally a issue of being closely related to whales, etc.
this is actually ii problems. one, the modifier refers to the wrong amanuensis/substantive (the 32 species, rather than only the killer whale as intended), and, two, the "-ing" makes this modifier modify the entire clause rather than just a noun, a situation that makes no sense.
this kills b/c.
--
only (a) remains. there are other bug, too; for case, the "and" at the end of (b) introduces false parallelism, "existence" in (c) is problematic, and "it" in (due east) violates parallelism.

Hi Palelemon,
I would like to add together something to the usage of 'being' here. Many posts say that usage of 'beingness' is wrong in GMAT which isn't the case. Like you said, 'beingness famous' is ungrammatical. I would like to differ. Firstly, 'Being famous' isn't a clause/statement.
Lets say 'Being famous is enjoyable'. Here being is used as a substantive and combined with the verb 'is', the sentence is admittedly fine.
Secondly, being tin be used for continuous tenses. Eg: He is beingness hateful.
We accept official evidences in the OG besides where the right choice contains being.
(Please refer to the discussions regarding 'being' by E-GMAT).
Here the usage of existence would exist wrong since Being famous for its ambitious hunting pods will and so have no verb and would result in a fragment. (Being famous is the substantive here without a verb).

Why is Eastward wrong?
In A and B with include, it's talking about one killer whale but includes conveys killer whales are more one, no?
Also, don't nosotros need it in A for information technology to exist correct?

The subject of the verb "include" is "species", which is plural. (The 32 species include xxxx)
Due east is wrong because the plural discipline "species" does not match with atypical verb "includes"..
The verb does non signal whether the object is atypical or plural. The object of the verb "include" could be atypical or plural.
Here the object "the killer whale" is singular, one of those 32 species. "The killer whale" does not draw a single animal, only the species as a whole. Even so "the killer whale" is singular - 1 species. Definite article "the" tin can be used to depict a species as a whole.

I was able to marker the correct answer choice. Just to ameliorate my understanding that why an answer selection is wrong, i got ane doubt.
Please clarify.
Choice E
includes the creature known as the killer whale, which can grow to exist 30 feet long and it is
Above pick can be ruled out because the verb includes does not agree with plural subject area.
However if the choice choice is inverse every bit beneath
include the animal known as the killer whale, which can abound to exist 30 feet long and it is
Now is the above answer choice incorrect?
Is the usage of information technology incorrect ?

Selection Eastward
includes the beast known as the killer whale, which can grow to be thirty feet long and it is
In a higher place option tin can be ruled out considering the verb includes does not agree with plural subject field.
Withal if the option choice is changed as below
include the beast known as the killer whale, which tin can grow to be 30 feet long and it is
Now is the above reply choice wrong?
Is the usage of information technology incorrect ?
Hi Sahil,
Thanks for posting your dubiety here.
The reason why the modified version of Choice E is incorrect is that the listing is non grammatically parallel now. The elements in the list are as follows:
- i. which can grow to be 30 feet long and
2. it is
Please note that while the first entity in the list is dependent clause, the 2d is an independent clause. Since both the information pertain to killer whale, which should exist uses as the field of study of both the verbs tin grow and is continued past the connector and to create the correct parallel listing.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
